Most Lazy Dog Breeds Perfect for a Couch Potato Owner

We are all caught up in our busy lives, chasing dreams and walking the extra mile. Dogs, come as special gifts to enrich our lives, but very few of us believe it is possible to make this leap. If you are in the mix of the hustle-bustle of city life, leaving no time for yourself and your family - you may think it will be a crazy mistake to adopt a dog. It could be if you absolutely do not want to take any additional responsibility.

But if you are a passionate dog lover and cherish having a pet partner without taking too much time off your day, then there are some breeds you may want to consider. In general, it is always a good idea to do your research before you bring a dog home, so that whatever breed you adopt seamlessly fits your lifestyle.

The ‘lazy dog breeds’ are supposedly lazy, not because they are truly lazy, but because they are built that way. They need less energy for their bodies to function, and excessive exercise may be detrimental to such breeds. Any dog you bring home requires some ‘work’, so don't assume you can bring them home and forget about them. The closest analogy is having a baby. But babies grow up and hopefully become responsible adults, dogs are babies for life. They need to be cared for.

Here are some low-energy dog breeds you can pick from to choose your lifestyle:

Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu is a small and sturdy dog with a lush, long, double-hair coat. It belongs to the ‘toy dog breed’ originating from Tibet, and are affectionate, playful, and outgoing dogs. The name Shih Tzu originates from the Chinese word for “lion” because of the breed's lion-like appearance. It’s no surprise but Shih Tzu owners have been delighted with this ‘lion dog’ for a thousand years, because of their playful and courageous demeanor.

Shih Tzu weighing between 9 to 16 pounds, and standing between 8 to 11 inches, are solid for dogs of their sizes. They will stick to your side like glue, and don't need much exercise except for following you around the house. These breeds heavily depend on us for companionship. Due to their petite size and high intelligence, they are relatively easy to train and care for.

Shiz Tzu

Shih Tzus have always been a house pet and lap dog and have never been bred for any other purposes. When properly trained, they can be excellent companion dogs. Their small sizes make them excellent dogs for apartments and smaller living spaces. This breed is loved for its charming and lovable temperament and loves nothing more than hanging out with its humans. They warm up to strangers very quickly and are also very kids friendly.

They have a thick coat, with all their hair, and dislike the hot weather. When you do take them outside, make sure that the sun is not too hot.

Pug

Pugs are confident and playful pooches. People who have pugs know that they aren’t the most enthusiastic breeds when it comes to physical activity. Pugs are not working breed dogs, so they have never needed to be active or energetic. They simply move through life at a slower pace. Pugs are native to China and were pets to kings, and lived a life of luxury and royalty. Royal servants took care of their needs. All they had to do was sit around and accompany their owners, which is what they do now.

Pug

Pugs weigh around 14 to 18 pounds, and are 11 to 12 inches in height. They are even-keeled and do not require much exercise. Most of their needs are met indoors. They are fun and playful personalities and are just happy to be around their humans. Because of their lifestyle, they tend to get a little obese. Hence it's important to keep an eye on how much you feed your pug and make sure it gets some basic daily exercise to burn the extra calories.

Chow Chow

Chow Chow dogs are not usually social or outgoing kind of dogs. They tend to be aloof with strangers and can get aggressive with other dogs. But they are devoted to protecting their family. Which is explained by their history as guard dogs for livestock and homes. Chow Chow’s temperament can be snappy and fiercely protective, but they make good apartment dogs because they are low-key and don't require too much in the way of exercise.

Chow Chow

Chow Chow is a medium-sized dog ranging in height from 17 to 20 inches, and in weight from 50 pounds to 75 pounds. It is fairly intelligent but they have an independent and stubborn streak. They require a firm patient hand to train them. It’s also important to train them from a young age so that bad aggressive behavior doesn’t build. To make them good family pets, they need plenty of early socialization including exposure to children.

They have a thick and coarse coat, which suggests this dog breed sheds a lot. To keep it well groomed, it requires continuous brushing. Because of their fur coating, they can survive well in cold weather, but they do not fare well in extremely hot weather conditions. They require a cool environment, especially on hot weather days - keep them inside.

Energy Level: Low

Exercise Requirements: 20 minutes per day

Great Dane

Great Danes are huge, powerful, and elegant dogs. They are considered gentle giants, who are moderately playful, affectionate, and good with children. They will guard their homes. These are big beasts, which could be misleading to think they need a lot of exercises. But these aren’t particularly active. Given their size, they do need some room to move around. So don't misjudge their lack of exercise and equate them with small apartment dogs. In any case, their exercise needs are fairly minimal. This doesn’t mean that if you are looking for a small hike outside, they cannot accompany you. For that matter, they are considered easy to train.

Great Dane

Great Danes weigh around 100 to 120 pounds, and are 30 to 32 inches in height! Anyone who wants to have a Great Dane, not only needs to accommodate the size of this gentle giant but also its needs. A dog this size eats larger quantities of food, so feeding will cost you a lot more than a Shih Tzu, etc.

Exercise Requirements: 20 to 40 minutes per day
