Pomeranian

Pomeranian or Indian Spitz, are tiny dogs with big attitudes. Their vivacious personality with a foxy face and glamorous-looking coat makes them one of the most popular dog breeds in India. The name ‘Pomeranian’ comes from Pomerania, which is a region in Northern Europe from where they originated, although they are also more affectionately known as Poms or Pom Poms.

An interesting fact about Pomeranians is that they weren’t always so little. They used to weigh as much as 20 - 30 pounds before they were bred down in size for British royalty, Queen Victoria of England. They are considered to be descendants of ancient Arctic dogs. The story goes as, Queen Victoria was so smitten with the breed while visiting Florence, Italy that she brought Poms in town, and rest assured the breeds’ popularity. Her love for this breed was so strong and fascinating that she became a serious breeder and exhibitor of Poms, and organized several dog shows.

These breeds were in fact introduced in India by the British.

Nevertheless, Poms have been very popular since time memorial. Sir Issac Newton, Martin Luther King, Michelangelo, and Mozart all had Pomeranian pet dogs.

Poms are beloved dogs of Indian households and an ideal companion for royals and commoners alike. These are bold, independent dogs that know how to be on their own and still be loyal to their owners. For a breed their size, they are known for a high level of character. Belonging to the toy group, the breed’s special appeal is their glamorous look, with fluffy double coat, small almond eyes with short ears.

Physical attributes

Males stand 8 to 11 inches and weigh 3 to 7 lbs.

Females stand 6 to 7 inches and weigh 3 to 7 lbs.

The average life span of 12 - 16 years.

Personality

Poms are feisty, bold, and curious-natured dogs. They enjoy being the center of attention in the house and are very playful companions to have in your family. Although they make great pets, they may not be the best choice for families who have small kids.

Pomeranians are very headstrong and can be very hard to train, if not socialized with kids and other dogs during the early stages when they are puppies. Being a pet owner comes with a lot of responsibility, hence it’s very important to spend time with your Poms to socialize them and give them obedience training.

Teaching them the ‘Quiet’ command comes in handy with the ‘yappy’ barks that they are excessively known for. Learning how to care for your pom is a huge commitment before you decide to adopt one.

This breed, although small and compact in size, are very outgoing in nature and can make great pets if trained and socialized correctly.

Poms are active dogs that do need daily exercise, even it is just a walk around the block. AllDogs recommend giving Poms their daily dose of min 20 minutes of exercise, to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. These charismatic beings enjoy learning little tricks and performing, to please their pet parents.

They are intelligent enough to understand what’s going on around them, and can easily make sense of their surroundings. For families with elderly people, they make very good companions because of their alertness and lovable nature. They do not have a tendency to overeat, and hence don’t generally tend to get obese due to their active nature.

We do recommend giving them enough grooming attention, to keep their double coat in good condition. Grooming once or twice weekly, or even daily during the shedding season is highly recommended.

Health

Pomeranians are generally healthy little dogs, and responsible breeders should screen them for primary health conditions such as luxating patellas (kneecaps that slip out of place), hypothyroidism, collapsing tracheas, congestive heart failure, seizures, and alopecia X (black skin disease). They can also suffer from eye infections, skin irritations, and tooth decay.

Feed with care

AllDogs recommend feeding Poms dry food or crunchy milk bones to help keep their teeth and gums in good condition.
