Pug

Pugs are purebred dogs, which are also commonly referred to as clowns of the canine world. These adorable looking dogs, considered toys of the dog world, were originally bred to be lap dogs and thrive on human companionship.

These are one of the oldest dogs to originate out of ancient China, and its distinct facial traits of wrinkles is what makes its special and elite. The deeper the facial wrinkle, the more revered the breed is.

Legend has it that the wrinkle on the forehead of Pug’s reads as ‘Prince’ in Chinese, which made it a top companion for emperors and aristocrats.

Pugs are one of the most famous dog breeds in India. Combined with the urbanization of the country and the viral marketing campaign of a telecom company, Pugs became a very popular dog breed in India during the year 2000s.

Personality

Pugs are happy and affectionate dogs, who form a good companion to humans with their playfulness and mischievousness. These dogs love being around children and can thrive very well in an apartment living. They aren’t meant to be life of the crowd, but retort to quiet and serious living. They can be quite stubborn and hence crate training at an early age is quite vital.

Pugs are ideal house dogs, primarily thanks to their stable temperament and loving disposition. People don’t often expect the Pugs to shed, but surprisingly pugs shed a lot! They are generally playful and do not require lots of activity. They also are content to do whatever their owner wants to do; whether watching movies all day long or going for a drive on the beach, they are just happy to with doing a lot or doing nothing. Very intelligent, and at times willful, pugs are happy and affectionate pups who remain very loyal to their owners. AllDogs staff know of people who even treat their pugs like their own kids, literally.

As these dogs are fairly laid back, they are usually not given to bark, chew or digging. Pugs double up as a perfect sidekick, by tending to follow the owner around the house, wanting to sit on your lap and sleep on the bed with you. Don’t expect them to guard, retrieve or hunt like other dogs. Pugs are bred to be companions, and that’s exactly what they do best.

Health

Adopting a pug from a responsible breeder is the number one criteria to own a healthy and loving pug. As pugs have brachycephalic (squashed face) features, they tend to develop respiratory diseases, due to restricted air flow to the lungs.

Some of the common problems include reverse sneezing, shortness of breath, difficulty exercising, and overheating. Sadly, Pugs are also prone to several other neurological diseases, some of which are unique to them such as Pug Dog Encephalitis (PCD), caused by a genetic component, which can lead to seizure and can be fatal to their health.

AllDogs recommends this skin lotion to reduce skin itchiness, some of the Indian home remedies such as coconut oil and aloe vera may also work. AllDogs also recommends trying out this de-shedding tool to manage shedding better.

Taking proper care and paying regular visits to the veterinarian is very important to keeping your Pug healthy. Those large prominent eyes are also susceptible to developing corneas, but can be treated with medication. These are companions that require care and attention as they grow older.

Similar to other dog breeds, Pugs are also prone to developing disease involving hip or knee joint. AllDogs recommends this joint support supplement to help your pug with joint support, but please do consult your veterinarian before you give any supplements to your dog.

Feeding Pugs

While Pug’s first love is humans, their second love is food. These dogs love to eat, and will eat as much as you feed them, with hardly any resistance towards food. Hence, it your responsibility to watch how much and what you feed your Pug. Due to this eating habit, Pugs are prone to obesity, which can lead to heart and respiratory problems, hence maintaining a healthy weight is critical for a pug to live a long and healthy life. To avoid weight gain, supplement their diet with healthy foods such as raw carrots, and avoid feeding fatty or unhealthy snacks.

A daily amount of 1 to 1.5 cup of high quality dry food, twice a day, with 20 minutes of daily exercise is recommended to keep your Pug healthy and fit. Feed recommended portions, limit treats and encourage exercise.

For home cooked food you can prepare an excellent portion of greens using baby carrots, beets, spinach, beans, rice, potatoes, yogurt, fruits eggs and meat.

Pugs are best fed when they are fed just correctly. Recommended daily amount is 1 – 1.5 cups of high quality dry food twice a day. AllDogs recommends this puppy food for puppies and adult food for adults.

Dog food should be free of harsh ingredients and any artificial flavors, colors and preservatives, or animal byproducts. Recipes that are comprised of these types of ingredients can have adverse effects on overall health and well being of your dog. Hence make sure you only serve high quality dog food, such as X.

Given the popularity of purebred dogs these days, one can easily find a puppy or a grown up dog easy to adopt from your network. Alldogs.in recommends one always considers adopting from someone who is struggling to meet the pet's needs before considering taking home a new puppy.
